Prof. Alexander Bley

Senior Researcher

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he served in the Prime Minister’s Office, and in his final position, he was Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir’s Advisor on Arab Affairs.


Prof. Bligh served as the Chief Scientist of the Ministry of Science and Technology (2016–2020). He headed the Departments of Israel Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, and Political Science at Ariel University, where he also founded and became the first head of the Department of Middle Eastern Studies. Later, he served as Acting Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. He has published numerous books and academic articles.


Prof. Bligh is a frequent commentator in both Israeli and international media and was among the founders of the newspaper “Hadashot”. He also broadcasted from Canada for Kol Israel (Israel Radio).


As an academic, Prof. Bligh researches four main areas:

  • The political history of Jordan and Saudi Arabia and their relations with Israel;

  • Israel, the Palestinians, and Israeli Arabs;

  • The policy on prisoners of war and missing persons in Western democracies, with a special focus on Israel;

  • And participation in NATO’s “Science for Peace and Security” program, developing tools for combating terrorism that combine mathematical analysis with deep familiarity of the field.

He currently serves as a Senior Research Fellow at the Chaikin Chair in Geostrategy at the University of Haifa.
